Just ramblin’

Didja watch the new Paula Abdul video on Idol? Didja think it kinda sucked? There was a rumor that the video was rejected or banned for MTV video rotation, which isn’t true. Which begs the ultimate question: when was the last time you saw a music video on MTV?
The Boss’ offspring are showing they have bigger cojones than their daddy does. Consider this recent quote from little Hankie:
"Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country…let me put it this way: I don’t think (Sox) wanted to play us in the ALCS"
First of all, there is no love lost for the Yankees in Seattle, and we are absolutely thrilled that they signed up A-Rod to do nothing for them in the playoffs for another 10 years. Second, it’s hard to imagine the Sox not wanting to play the Yanks in the ALCS, when in 2004 the Sox (vs Yankees) achieved the only reverse-sweep in baseball history to advance to the World Series.
Now that the Eagles have coaxed Samuel away from the Patriots, the Seahawks can hopefully offer a decent payday to keep Trufant beyond the next season…unless they decide to go with the franchise tag for an additional two years like they did with Walter Jones. In other Seahawk news, there were offers on the table, but Josh Brown publicly announced early today he wouldn’t play next year for the ‘hawks…and this evening he signed with the Rams. Dammit, I loved the look on Devin Hester’s face last season when he realized he had been tackled by a kicker…Brown will be missed. And did Seattle even entertain bringing Isaac Bruce in for an interview? Now we have to deal with him against the 49ers. And talk about going from FIRST to WORST: Giants free safety Gibril Wilson, new owner of a Super Bowl ring, just signed with the Raiders. Money talks, and stupid people have uncanny hearing…
Unfortunately, the NFL refused to air it…they decided it was too controversial. In other words, once again NFL=No Fun League.

You might recall the time I posted about this butthole, John Bruce "Jack" Thompson, who claimed that the Virginia Tech Massacre was conducted by someone who trained himself to kill utilizing the game Half-Life: Counter-Strike…which wasn’t possible, since it was essentially proven beyond reasonable doubt the kid never played ANY video games. Then the idiot sends a letter to Bill Gates, blaming Microsoft for 32 deaths…even though it was an entirely different software company that wrote the game. Oh sure, Microsoft Games published the Xbox port of Counter-Strike, but the VT shooter didn’t own or play on an Xbox.
Well, another campus shooting rampage at NIU, and another shot at sensationalist stardom for Mr. Butthole. This time, his hunch was correct: the kid reportedly had played Counter-Strike. Again, the game is to blame, and the fact that the shooter went off his meds should be considered just a footnote. Now Mr. Butthole is threatening to sue NIU if they do not provide all documentation that the shooter played violent video games. In fact, he is so brain-dead that he states in his threat letter that the shooter at Virginia Tech had also "trained" with Counter-Strike, which everyone else in the world knows isn’t true.
The best part is that the only air-time he could get was with FOX News…in other words, the respectable news media outlets won’t give him the time of day. Instead, they are essentially IGNORING the butthole. A quick search at Google News shows biting commentary by, and…well, nobody else, really.
And why would they pay any attention to him? It turns out he was a complete failure as an attorney, and likes to publicly insult people who don’t agree with him. But I’ll bet he’s going to turn up the volume so that other news media outlets can’t ignore him and will start reporting on him…maybe he’ll shoot somebody just to prove a point or something…

Need a converter box?

Turns out that there is a 90-day expiration period on the coupons the government is issuing for people to save $40 toward a converter box that will allow digital TV signals to be converted to analog format so that you can continue watching television shows. If you have applied for a coupon, you’ll get it next week…or, about 365 days before the switch happens. So basically, you have to buy now and then store the converter box in a drawer for at least nine months before it will be useful. Anybody want to lay down some money on how much less those converter boxes will cost 12 months from now, essentially negating any savings the coupon supposedly gives you? Didn’t think so…
To make matters worse, there is a lot of false FUD concerning the impending digital switch…consider the following quote from the link above:
The coupon program applies only to about 13 million to 21 million owners of the older-model sets that rely on antennas to watch TV.
There has been a lot of false reporting like this, and a lot of people think they need the converter when they don’t. In truth, the digital switch will apply to:
  1. people who depend on a roof-top or rabbit-ear antenna to receive TV signals, and/or…
  2. televisions that don’t have a built-in digital tuner

So if your television is 20 years old, you subscribe to cable, and you have a set-top box provided by your cable company, you won’t even notice that the digital switch has happened. If you bought your TV yesterday, it has a digital tuner, and you use an over-the-air antenna, you also won’t notice anything. Link.

On the plus side…three years ago the digital switch was scheduled to happen last year, and someone at work decided to purchase a new DLP and sell his old TV, thinking it would soon be obsolete. So I picked up a gorgeous, 36" FD Trintron for $100. I shit you not. Just four years earlier, that TV retailed for $1400. I see deals on CRT televisions all the time now, people are dumping them as they upgrade thinking they’ll soon be obsolete. Personally, I’m going to be enjoying this "obsolete" TV for quite some time after the digital switch occurs…keep your eyes open for killer deals on fantastic televisions! There are a lot of uninformed people out there!

Trash TV

Been sick, then caring for my sick family, so I’ve been home all week. Not much time to relax until the kid takes his nap, so if most of the housework is done, I’ll turn on the TV…then usually turn it off cuz nothing is on. But today the channel was tuned to Maury Povich, and lucky me, the top story was a woman who had 17 different men tested to see if they were the father of her child, fourteen tests of which were revealed on Maury’s show. For today’s show, they decided to do something totally absurd: have her husband tested. I mean, wow. There are really people out there that are that stupid?
